In a bold move that could reshape the future of zero-emission freight, Hyroad Energy has acquired Nikola Motor’s hydrogen assets, including 113 Class-8 hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks (HFCEVs), spare parts, and refueling infrastructure. The acquisition marks one of the largest transfers of hydrogen trucking assets to date and positions Hyroad as a rising force in the clean transportation sector.
Hyroad Energy, which describes itself as a leader in hydrogen-powered Class-8 trucks and trucking-as-a-service, has made it clear that this acquisition is more than just a business deal—it’s a transformative leap toward decarbonizing heavy-duty freight.
From 0 to 113 Hydrogen Semi Trucks Overnight
With the stroke of a pen, Hyroad expanded its hydrogen trucking fleet from nearly zero to a 113-truck strong hydrogen powerhouse. These trucks, once stranded by Nikola’s struggles, will now become the backbone of Hyroad’s hydrogen logistics network.
According to CEO Dmitry Serov, this acquisition “significantly advances Hyroad’s mission to provide turnkey hydrogen trucking solutions that reduce the complexity and risk typically associated with adopting zero-emission technologies.” He added that the trucks and infrastructure represent “immediate capacity to put proven hydrogen fuel cell technology on the road to meet demand for zero-emission trucks.”
Supporting Existing Nikola Owners
Hyroad isn’t just expanding its fleet—it’s also extending a lifeline to existing Nikola hydrogen truck owners. The company has pledged to support and service Nikola trucks already on the road, ensuring continuity for early adopters and helping to grow trust in hydrogen-powered freight.
This commitment sets Hyroad apart in an industry where some manufacturers have abruptly exited, leaving customers stranded. By contrast, Hyroad is signaling stability, reliability, and long-term investment in hydrogen.
Why California Comes First
Hyroad plans to deploy its newly acquired assets in California, a state with an expanding hydrogen refueling network and ambitious clean transportation goals. With strict emissions regulations and significant state incentives, California provides the perfect launchpad for Hyroad’s fleet.
The move also aligns with California’s broader push for zero-emission freight corridors, which aim to decarbonize one of the state’s largest sources of emissions: long-haul trucking.
A Turning Point for Hydrogen Freight
Hyroad’s acquisition proves there is real momentum for the technology in heavy-duty applications. Battery-electric trucks face challenges with weight and charging downtime on long hauls, whereas hydrogen fuel cells can deliver extended range and quick refueling—making them well-suited for commercial trucking. Hyroad has not only strengthened its fleet but also revived confidence in hydrogen freight, sending a clear signal that hydrogen trucking is here to stay.
