Mauritania’s Energy Ambitions: A Game Changer for Africa’s Hydrogen Market

Writer: HXHX

Mauritania is on the cusp of a major transformation, shifting from an agriculture-based economy to becoming Africa’s next energy powerhouse. With the recent gas production breakthrough at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG field, the country is gaining momentum in the global energy landscape. But beyond gas, Mauritania’s green hydrogen ambitions could make it a key player in the clean energy transition.

The GTA project, developed by BP, Kosmos Energy, and national oil companies from Mauritania and Senegal, marks a historic milestone. With an annual production capacity of 2.3 million tonnes of LNG, it strengthens energy security in West Africa and attracts much-needed investment. However, what truly sets Mauritania apart is its bold commitment to green hydrogen.

Leveraging its vast solar and wind resources, Mauritania is positioning itself as a prime supplier of green hydrogen to Europe, which aims to import 10 million tonnes annually by 2030. With an estimated 400 GW of commercially viable renewable energy, the country’s potential surpasses Germany’s total installed power capacity. This presents a massive opportunity for hydrogen investors, developers, and policymakers.

Why does this matter for the hydrogen market? Mauritania could emerge as a leading green hydrogen exporter, creating a new supply chain for Europe and beyond. As governments push for decarbonization, securing reliable hydrogen sources will be crucial for industrial transformation.

With strategic partnerships and infrastructure investments, Mauritania is setting the stage to become Africa’s premier energy hub—a move that could reshape the global hydrogen trade.
